Y1 to Y3 classes retell stories for Literacy Month
By Yuan Cheng and Jaycee Dela Rosa
Students from the Middle Years Programme (MYP) Years One to Three shared fables, short stories, and fairytales to the Upper Primary students for the Literacy Month last October 8 in the fourth floor classrooms.
The event was also a competition between classes held from 9:25 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Judges evaluated the students’ classroom decorations, content, theme, and presentations. Students wearing costumes earned bonus points to their class’s score.
Year 1 students presented fables. Habakkuk featured “The Eagle and the Fox”; Nahum role-played “Saving the Birds”; Zechariah narrated “The Fox and the Crow”. The tales showed the importance of kindness, humility, and respect for every creature. The students also decorated their classrooms with animals and natural scenery, wore costumes and accessories, and held a Question-and-Answer session to engage the audience.
Year 2 students showcased short stories. Antioch displayed “How My Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife” through a gallery walk, while Bethsaida presented “The Gift of the Magi”; Emmaus narrated “The New Dress”. The presentations covered the themes of self-acceptance and the recognition of a person’s worth.
Year 3 featured fairy tales. Carmel acted out “Rapunzel”; Sinai performed “Cinderella”; Golgotha presented “Snow White”. Through acting, costumes, props, and decorations, they highlighted the themes of freedom, kindness, and goodness.
Language and Literature teachers guided the students throughout the preparation by explaining the criteria and giving feedback on their presentations.
Explaining the significance of the event, Y3 Language and Literature Teacher Ms. Angela Dillera said, “The activity helps students see reading as an active and meaningful experience rather than simply a task of understanding a text.” She also noted that the lower levels used more accessible and engaging texts for the young learners, while the higher levels had their own competition that focused on deeper reading and literary analysis.
The Language and Literature department announced the winners on October 16. The award for the Best Costumes went to Y1 Habakkuk, Y2 Emmaus, and Y3 Carmel. The Overall Champion for each batch was given to Y1 Zechariah, Y2 Emmaus, and Y3 Carmel.
