Lower Primary Unit 1 Learning Highlights

A few weeks into the school year, and our lower primary students are already enriched with inquiry-driven experiences. Here is a glimpse into their learning and development.

Grade 1: Exploring Culture and Developing Numeracy Skills

Our Grade 1 learners engaged in a meaningful Unit of Inquiry activity designed to deepen their understanding of how cultural items influence the way people live, celebrate, communicate, and behave. Through the Mystery Box/Show and Tell Activity, learners brought an item that represents their culture or family traditions. Each learner had the opportunity to reveal their item, share its significance, and explain how it reflects the traditions, customs, or practices of their family or culture. This activity provided an opportunity for learners to develop their understanding of culture and connection while practicing respectful communication and active listening. By listening to their classmates’ experiences, they learned to appreciate the similarities and differences that make each family and culture unique.

Meanwhile, in Numeracy, our pupils further strengthened their mathematical skills through Koobits, engaging in interactive activities that supported the development and application of their numeracy knowledge. By integrating technology into Numeracy, our learners discovered that mathematics is not only about numbers but also about observing the world around them. Through hands-on digital exploration, they strengthened their understanding while becoming responsible and confident users of technology.

Through these experiences, our Grade 1 learners continued to grow as curious, respectful, and confident learners, making meaningful connections between their classroom learning and their everyday experiences.

Learning becomes more meaningful when we discover, share, and learn from one another.

Grade 2: Acknowledging Influences and Enhancing Literacy Skills

Integrating the lessons in the Unit of Inquiry and Literacy, our Grade 2 students explored autobiographies. Using iPads and the Epic! digital library, they worked in pairs to read the inspiring life stories of Mother Teresa, Walt Disney, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Nelson Mandela. As young inquirers, they studied each autobiography by using WH questions to uncover important details about the lives of these remarkable individuals. They investigated who influenced them, where they grew up, what experiences shaped their character, how the people around them helped them overcome challenges, and what lessons could be learned from their journeys. Each pair also completed an autobiography organizer and confidently shared their discoveries with the class.

This activity not only strengthened students’ reading comprehension, but it also helped them make meaningful connections between the text and the unit’s central idea, “People around us help shape who we are.” Through collaboration and discussion, the learners also realized that behind every inspiring individual were parents, teachers, mentors, friends, and communities—people who also play an important role in their own lives.
