Young Innovators and Budding Scientists: A Lower Primary Learning Experience

The Lower Primary students recently engaged in an exciting cross-grade learning experience that highlighted creativity, inquiry, and collaboration between Grade 1 and Grade 2 learners.

As part of their Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme Where We Are in Place and Time, the Grade 1 students explored the central idea, “Inventions change the world.” Throughout the week, the young learners investigated the reasons behind inventions, the contributions of inventors throughout history, and the ways these innovations continue to shape societies today. Demonstrating the IB learner profiles of Inquirers, Communicators, and Thinkers, the students applied their research and thinking skills as they designed and created their own imaginative inventions.

At the end of the week, the Grade 1 students proudly visited the Grade 2 classrooms to present their inventions just like in Shark Tank! With enthusiasm and confidence, they explained the purpose of their creations and how their inventions could help people in everyday life.

Meanwhile, the Grade 2 students were busy exploring the natural world through their Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme How the World Works. Guided by the central idea, “Living things have unique physical characteristics, structures, and needs that support their growth and development,” the students created their own terrariums. Through this hands-on activity, they investigated the basic needs of living things, as well as how plants grow and survive in different environments.

During the exchange, Grade 2 students presented their terrariums to the visiting Grade 1 learners, explaining how the plants inside their miniature ecosystems grow and what they need to thrive. The activity encouraged students to demonstrate the learner profiles of being Principled, Balanced, and Caring as they shared their knowledge with younger peers.

This collaborative experience allowed students from both grade levels to learn from one another while celebrating their discoveries. It was a wonderful opportunity for our young learners to practice communication, deepen their understanding of their units of inquiry, and appreciate the creativity and curiosity that drive both invention and scientific exploration.
