Hope Christian High School has always believed in the advocacy of a clean and green environment which is the key to a better future. This was proven again after the recent activities of Hope has participated and initiated like the overwhelming support for the “Run for Ilog Pasig” last October 10, 2010 and successful “Oplan Linis Benavidez” last October 15, 2010. Early this November our school has once again lifted the banner for the campaign for Mother Nature through what was called “The Hope Green Project: Vegetable Growing in the Campus. The event in cooperation with Lamoiyan Corporation, Gawad Kalinga, and Discovery Channel Philippines and was supported by the office of Manila’s very own Mayor Alfredo Lim, who shares the advocacy of urban gardening as a useful campaign against pollution and Global warming. The event hopes to instill in us the value of maintaining a clean and green environment with the hope of providing us with food to lessen our country’s massive problem on hunger and malnutrition. Our school, Discovery Channel Philippines, and Gawad Kalinga also hopes that the project will serve as a trailblazer for other people to follow. Dr. Cecilio Pedro, our acting principal, thanked the students and faculty as he stressed the importance of a clean and green environment. Architect Ponson Chang, our building administrator, shared a brief history on urban planting followed by Ms. Victoria Clavel, a representative from the Office of the Mayor of Manila, who gave a message on behalf of Mayor Alfredo Lim. The Discovery Channel Philippines and Gawad Kalinga through their representatives emphasized further the importance of urban gardening. The group was divided into small groups to work on their assigned plot. The planting session concluded with the presentation of a donation to the school from D-LIGHT, one of the sponsors, and lunch compliments of Jolibee Masangkay, another important sponsor of the vegetable-growing project.
